The Problem With Sundowns' Sirino Saga

Mamelodi Sundowns’ attacking midfielder Gaston Sirino appears to have missed out on the opportunity to play for Al Ahly under former boss Pitso Mosimane, with the Egyptian giants said to have moved on from a potential move for the Uruguayan after a breakdown in negotiations. Mosimane is quoted as saying "We move on with Gaston Sirino. I mean‚ you have seen what he said, he has spoken straight and openly about missing out on the opportunity to play for the biggest club on the continent.” The 29-Year-Old is currently contracted to Sundowns through June 2025, and given his age, he would understandably be keen on one last big career move.
In the latest episode of The SL Podcast’s “The Carwash” with former Orlando Pirates & Mamelodi Sundowns star Teko Modise and former Ajax Cape Town goalie Sean Roberts discuss the failed move, with Modise arguing that Sirino can’t be frustrated with Sundowns considering he signed an extension in June 2020. Modise stated “The problem comes when you want to leave and doesn’t happen, [but] you just renewed your contract 6-7 months ago and now when the move doesn’t happen you sulk. If you sign an extension and there’s no buyout clause, chief, stay there. You can’t sign an extension and then try to force your way out (6 months later)”.
