The One Quality Pirates Are Lacking…

MTN8 champions Orlando Pirates had the chance to stamp their authority in the DStv Premiership when they took on Mamelodi Sundowns , but struggled against the defending league champions, losing last weekend’s meeting 1-0. The Soweto giants now trail Downs by eight points, and still have to take on an in-form Moroka Swallows side who are tied with Masandawana on points despite a lower goal difference. Former Orlando Pirates’ midfielder Teko Modise believes that there is one quality that the ‘Bucaneers’ have been lacking in the league.
Modise argues that his former side struggle against teams who are comfortable sitting back and defending the ball, rather than pressing and using a high defensive line. This was clear in their most recent match with Downs opting for five players in their backline which, as Modise points out in his analysis, made it difficult for Pirates’ front three of Lorch, Dzvukamanja & Pule to get in behind the lines and get chances in the final third. Listen to full show for more football banter from Modise and co-host Sean Roberts, formerly of Ajax Cape Town & Mamelodi Sundowns.
