The MTN8 conclusion was highly entertaining and full of drama, with a dodgy penalty decision, a red card, and all the makings of an intense finale. The final saw Orlando Pirates end their six year trophy drought with a 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic, to capture the first piece of silverware available this season. Orlando Pirates started their campaign with a 1-0 win over Cape Town City, before humiliating neighbors Kaizer Chiefs 5-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals.
In the SL Podcast’s latest episode of the Fan Reaction Show, Bucs fans discuss their long wait for silverware, with their previous triumph having come in 2014 when they won the Nedbank Cup. Since then, Pirates have struggled despite coming close to trophies, having finished second on the Absa Premiership table in back-to-back campaigns under then-coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojević in 2017/18 and 2018/19. Pirates fans stated “We are very very happy, it’s been long overdue, the players showed us the most fight since the days of Lucky Lekgwathi”
