South African took to the polls yesterday as the country held its by-elections which have been delayed since March due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. These particular by-elections are important as key municipalities could see a change to their leadership. Forty parties will compete in 95 municipal wards, hosting more than 440 candidates, 19 of whom are independent. This year around 69% of the candidates are men and 31% are women.
