
Government needs to support taxi industry, as commuters grow anxious of 100% capacity during covid-19 pandemic

For many South Africans , taxis are the main mode of transportation and during this pandemic we can’t help but wonder the effect and impact the COVID -19 pandemic has had on passengers , today we look at & unpack some of the concerns passengers might have. Approximately 14 million people use taxis each day and the average time spent in a taxi by 1 passenger is 65 minutes , The average minibus taxi takes up to 15 passengers and according to the new regulations these taxis will run at 100% capacity for short distances. Siphosihle Mbuli and Gamelihle Bovana speak to Siyabulela Fobosi, who is doing his PhD in Industrial Sociology focusing on the minibus taxi industry at the University of Johannesburg. Fobosi says the government should be providing financial support to the industry and is almost single handedly carrying the country's transport system. Another guest Onwaba Msebi, a student from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape who travels to school by taxi daily says the move to allow taxis to operate at 100% is putting the lives of commuters at risk of contracting the coronavirus.
