At the start of 2023, South Africa looked like it was finally turning a corner, with the National Treasury upbeat about bringing the country's ballooning government debt under control. The economy has been hit by record load shedding, Transnet's woes, sky-high interest rates and inflation, along with a slump in mining profits, have throttled tax income. Meanwhile, government's borrowing costs have soared due to a range of factors including the country's greylisting.
