South Africa has experienced a spate of cases of mob justice and vigilantism. Recently there were cases reported in Tshakuma, in the Vhembe district and another very well publicised case in Zandspruit, in Gauteng. Police Minister Bheki Cele has taken full responsibility for the police's failure to protect victims of mob violence while responding to the Zandspruit one. Nghamula Chauke had a panel discussion with Limpopo Police Spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, Limpopo Community Police Forum Chairperson Frans Kgasago and Criminologist from the University of Venda Ndivho Sithuga and they all agreed that there is a need for communities, SAPS and all stakeholders to work hand in hand in fighting crime as this will help in preventing cases of vigilantism.
